Frequently Asked Questions

Some Frequently Asked Question?

WHAT IS AN AUPAIR?

An aupair (English pronunciation: plural: au pairs) is a domestic assistant from a foreign country working for, and living as part of, a host family. Typically, au pairs take on a share of the family’s responsibility for childcare as well as in some instances some light housework, and receive a monetary allowance for personal use as well as board and lodgings. Au pair arrangements are subject to government restrictions, which specify an age range usually from mid-late teens to mid to late twenties; some countries explicitly limit the arrangement to females.

Incidentally, the term au pair is French and means “by mutual agreement”. Therefore, au pairs receive a pocket money, live free of charge with their host families, just as regular family members, and share meals with the families.

WHAT IS A HOST FAMILY?

A host family is a family consisting of at least one parent and one child under the age of 18 that invites an au pair from a foreign country for a specified period of time. The au pair lives “on equal terms” with the other members of the family and in return for food, board, and a salary, cares for children and does simple domestic work. Hosting an au pair is considered a program of cultural exchange.

Incidentally, the term au pair is French and means “by mutual agreement”. Therefore, au pairs receive a pocket money given to them by the host family, live free of charge with their host families, just as regular family members, and share meals with the families.

WHAT IS A WWOOFER?

WWOOF volunteers (known as WWOOFers generally do not receive money in exchange for services. The host provides food, lodging, and opportunities to learn, in exchange for assistance with farming or gardening activities. Host farms are often located in remote locations.

The duration of the visit can range from a few days to years. Workdays average five to six hours, and participants interact with WWOOFers from other countries. WWOOF farms include private gardens through smallholdings, allotments, and commercial farms.

WILL I RECEIVE A SALARY AS AN AU PAIR?

Firstly, you need to check your desired countries rules and regulations but as a general rule, as an au pair you will not receive a salary. Your host family will pay you a certain amount of pocket money.

Depending on your desired countries rules and regulation, there may be a minimum amount that has to be paid depending on hours. Otherwise, the amount to be paid is an amount agreed between both parties in the initial stage. We would suggest that this amount is agreed by both parties in writing beforehand with an outline of duties involved.

Please note, it is common for host families to give additional benefits to au pairs which should be taken into consideration before accepting or declining a placement. A common benefit could be the use of a car on days off with fuel included.

WHO PAYS THE TRAVEL AND FLIGHT EXPENSES?

The Au Pair would generally pay for the flight and travel expenses, however, in some cases host families do offer to pay in full or make a contribution towards expenses.

We would encourage Au Pairs to be met by the family on arrival to the country and to give them the best possible welcome.

WHAT IF I DO NOT DECLARE SOMETHING IMPORTANT ON MY PROFILE?

We would recommend putting together a full and complete profile, but in some cases, you may not want to provide a certain piece of important information on a public profile, which may be an important piece to the other interested parties, for example a sensitive allergy.

In this case, we would suggest that you bring this to the other parties attention during the interview stage. It is paramount that all profiles are honest and truthful to prevent any issues later on throughout the process.

Please note: As part of our terms and conditions, we will remove any profile which we believe to be dishonest or misleading.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE AU PAIR IS HOMESICK?

Quite often, in the beginning Au Pairs, being in unusual surroundings and away from home can become homesick and make a decision that they want to leave quickly.

Quite often, this situation could have been avoided through better communication from both parties.

We would always encourage families to welcome the Au Pair in immediately and make them feel at home, discuss any issues our difficulties that they may be having and also give them ample opportunity in the beginning to make contact with loved ones from home. We’d also encourage introductions to other local Au Pairs or foreign students that may live in the same area.

We would also encourage the Au Pair to bring difficulties to the Families attention and to request some more help if needed or further explanation of instructions if somethings unclear.

HOW MUCH HOUSEWORK SHOULD BE INCLUDED?

Only light house work which relates to the children should be included in the agreement. For Example: preparing meals for the children, tidying up toys, cleaning up after activities, helping with home work etc etc.

The Au Pairs main duties are to interact and mind with the children.

DOES THE AU PAIR NEED A VISA?

This will depend on both the Au Pairs and Host Families home countries and nationalities. We would suggest that you investigate this with your own authorities before making an agreement, and in instances where a Visa is required, it is important to have all documentation approved and the Visa issued before travel arrangements are made.

IS INSURANCE REQUIRED?

In some countries, (e.g. France) it is mandatory for the Host family to Insurance and would be recommended for the other party to have their own medical and travel insurance. In other instances the Au Pairs or WWOOFERs medical and travel insurance will suffice.

It is important for Host Families to check that the Au Pair or WOOFER have correct insurance in place prior to travelling and that the full term of their stay is covered to protect all parties against all eventualities.
